About the Pennystone Project
Offered as a free resource to gardening enthusiasts, the Pennystone Project explores landscape applications of plants indigenous to Pennsylvania, especially the northeastern counties. Our goal is to encourage stewardship of the varied and complex ecosystems found in the Pocono region of the northern Appalachians and to celebrate the pleasures of landscaping with wildflowers.
The basic concepts of sustainable landscaping and general conservation issues are widely discussed elsewhere. The Pennystone Project seeks to present detailed and comprehensive information concerning landscape applications for Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties in Pennsylvania, some of which may be helpful in adjacent areas. To that end, the project focuses on:
- Identification, descriptions, habitats, cultivation and availability of species native to the region
- Detailed descriptions of documented ecological communities found in the region
- Data concerning soils and soil groups for the area as they relate to landscaping potential
- Historical records for area climate, including weather daily logs dating back to 2004
- Articles and essays relating to native plant landscaping and design
We welcome questions relating to landscaping with native plants in Pennsylvania.
