Pennsylvania native plant guide

Summary information on habitat and landscape culture of hundreds of species, with emphasis on those native to northeastern Pennsylvania, all of which are commercially available, as well as a quick list of native species that do not appear to be available for purchase. Information on rare and endangered species and invasives of concern included here.

Trees and shrubs
Woody perennials are listed together because some species are identified as both.
Herbaceous perennials
Flowering perennials (except for grasses, sedges and rushes).
Grasses, sedges and rushes
Graminoids for almost every circumstance can be found for landscapes or restorations.
Ferns and fern allies
Pteriophytes form a foundation for many ecosystems and landscape designs.
Vines
Available vines are listed together; some are woody, some herbaceous.
Annuals
Almost always available only as seed, these may be useful in restorations.
Unavailable species
These plants do not appear to be commercially available.
Invasive species
Information from the Pennsylvania DCNR about species you should not support, and perhaps eradicate.
Protected species
Pennsylvania plants that have been designated as vulnerable, rare, threatened, endangered or extirpated.
